Description
Up for auction/sale is a vintage/antique pair of hand painted matched lidded soup/tea bowls with handles. I can't date these specifically, but was told they were brought home by a serviceman after WWII. While the two matched patterns are very similar (taken from the same design), they are definitely hand painted which can be seen in the subtle pattern differences.I looked all over these pieces for identification, but other than an old piece of masking tape which reads "Kutani" on the inside of one lid, I found no artist or company markings.
If you enjoy old Kutani-ware, and especially highly detailed artwork, the women in their Geisha outfits in both outdoor and indoor settings are just beautiful. After reviewing many similar pieces, I found no others with this ribbon styled
handle. I can only imagine the handles on these lids must have been designed for women, as the ribbon is very dainty for thicker fingers.
Both cups are in excellent "nearly new" condition, with no chips, cracks, or damage of any sort, and only very minimal (if any) signs of age or wear. The cups measure roughly 5" wide at the handles and have an 8oz capacity when filled to the brim.
I have described these soup bowls/tea cups as best I can, but to augment my description I have provided many high-resolution images of the bowls and lids from varying angles to allow for a detailed review of quality, condition, and desirability.
These beautiful (and somewhat unique) Japanese bowls will be packaged with care to best ensure they arrive as pictured and described.
