A little history
Joseph Iosifovich Shediva (1853-1915). Initially, Joseph worked for the musical CERVENY but moved to Ukraine around 1881, where he founded his firm in Odessa. He patented the design - the 'shediphon' - a brass instrument with two bells in 1901 and patented it in 1902 for Bohland & Fuchs In Graslitz. He also invented the 'lyrophone', but the 'shediphone' was one of his last inventions. In addition to the 4 valves, the fifth valve is operated with the left hand, redirecting the air stream into a smaller bell - and producing a sound from a cylindrical tube reminiscent of a trombone, and a more mellow sound played through the main bell, reminiscent of a euphonium.
